Automated Voice Coach for Elocution; Accent Softening & Public Speaking
Hi, every time I have a new student I introduce them to the value, convenience and power of, what I call ‘your automated voice coach’ in other words, Audio Books, to improve their speech clarity – effectively your own automated voice coach: when you want, at a time of purely your own convenience and allowing you to multitask in your busy working life.
Sure, listening can’t teach you what I teach: the essential mouth structures inside the mouth for a clear elocution & an internationally understood public speaking voice, but, it definitely augments my teaching and has always been an essential part of my own personal process when learning a different accent.
Automated Voice Coach Brainwashing
I would literally brainwash myself with this accent: going to sleep with accent samples on a loop so that I continued to hear the sounds even in my deep sleep – it works! It really does and earned me a lot of money in adverts, games, cartoons etc.
So, I am handing this info over to you and I think the best & most pleasurable source of this valuable material is either the carefully picked dramatisations on Radio 4 that I have and will blog about, or specific actors/authors reading books that are available on Amazon Audible.

But make sure they are not putting on an accent for the book, for example a regional London accent. It’s very important that you choose the accent you want to learn: not the actor.
Some actors are very good at reading audio books, they have clear diction and good cadence ie they don’t drop off energy wise at the end of every sentence, but some brilliant film actors are awful, because they are used to focusing their expertise into their visual acting, so please bear this in mind.
Audible by Amazon is My Favourite Automated Voice Coach
Amazon Audible is definitely a value for money product if clearer speech is what you want and you want to improve your success rate with your voice coach – whom hopefully is me or about to be! 🙂
You can download the app for free and have a free trial for a month. It’s handy on your mobile and once you’ve downloaded the book it’s your automated voice coach on the tube, in the car, when you can’t sleep when you can sleep (!) when you have to clear the kitchen (ugh) etc. Suddenly the worst jobs are bearable and even an excuse to carry on with the book! I’m currently saving my favourite – and yes I love her voice – for the kitchen reset. She really helps!
The first month is free but then it’s £8.99 pcm if you want to keep all your books even if you close your account and £5.99 if you don’t. Having grown up with a panelled library, I love keeping books but I may be deeply old fashioned as I rarely relisten, but I somehow can’t bear to part with favourites and I definitely do re listen to my favourite voices, such as the theatrical production of The Cazalets by Elizabeth Howard with Penelope Wilton as the narrator
The contract is only a for monthl, so you can always cancel if you don’t like it, but, for that monthly fee, you could listen to many voices because once you have listened to a book, if you decide you don’t like it or think it’s inappropriate for you to learn from, you can return it and swap it for a new one!
And, you can do this as many times as you like as long it is within one year of the purchase date! How amazing is that?!
Also very importantly, often audio books can be very expensive as some of the projects like the theatrical productions of plays with large cast members, are expensive to produce, but your monthly fee giving you ‘one credit’ can enable to purchase a production that costs £40 without membership, so it’s definitely worth it.
I always check the normal price before I use one of my credits, as I want excellent value.
Top Favourite Automated Voice Coach Audible Choices
Here are my two top favourites for clear, well spoken English and American:
The Cazalets by Elizabeth Jane Howard, dramatised by Sarah Daniels and Lin Coghlan. The characters are read out by a large cast of actors with excellent voices and steered by the wonderful voice of Penelope Wilton. PW narrates with such empathy, has great diction, pace, tone and musicality.
The Artists Way by Julia Cameron read by Eliza Foss. This book is wonderful to help you do any artistic endeavour you have dreamed of doing. I used it to become a singer. The double whammy is Eliza. She has a wonderful voice, with as many notes in one sentence as possible keeping you enthralled to hear the next bit and the next.. Her diction is superb like Penelope Wilton’s, but with the lovely long vowels of a well spoken American.
To Help You Choose Your Automated Voice Coach Voices
Click here for a large list of good voices to put into the search box on the app or website. Please check out the sample with me or someone you trust, to make sure the actor isn’t putting on a specific regional accent or, if that’s what you want, that they are reading in the specific regional accent you do want. Most times, they tend to use their own and put on accents for characters, but this is not always the case.
For your automated brain washing it is imperative that your accent brainwashing is specifically what you want, as this will have an effect on how you speak and the accent in you head when you speak to yourself.
If you want to speak clear, well spoken English, and like a good story, I highly recommend the production of the Cazalets I have linked, because, the interlocking stories are good, the voices are excellent and the dialogue is extremely well written ie no slang and fluid, well constructed phrases and sentences.
And it’s twelve hours for the price (if bought with a credit) of a 2 hour book!
